TikTok has taken the world by storm and has become a go-to platform for content creators, artists, and businesses. With its massive global user base of over 1.5 billion active users, TikTok provides an enormous opportunity to reach new audiences quickly with viral videos. However, going viral on the platform isn't a given, and it can be challenging to find your audience and drive engagement.
To help users promote their content, TikTok provides a robust suite of marketing tools that users can utilize to boost their accounts. We put these tools to the test by promoting one of our videos to learn how they work. In this blog post, we'll share what we learned from our experience and provide you with some tips on how to make the most of TikTok's marketing tools.

TikTok Creator Tools for Promoting Your Account
Promote is an advertising feature launched in 2021 and is available in the TikTok app that helps you increase the visibility of your videos, drive more traffic to your website, and enhance your chances of gaining followers. By using this feature, your video will be displayed as an advertisement for the duration of the promotion period. TikTok's creator tools provide three different ways to promote your account and videos, each with its own price point and promotion pack.

1. Getting More Video Views
The first option is to get more video views. This tool lets you promote your video to reach a larger audience. Based on your promotion budget you can choose how many people will see your video in a day or even choose to spend a specific amount over several days.
I utilized this feature when I found my video couldn't surpass 200 views. This option is great if you have a video that you believe is engaging but needs a larger audience. This package is the cheapest out of all 3 options.

2. Getting More Followers
The second option is to get more followers. This tool allows you to select how long of a promotion cycle you want and what your budget is per day to promote your account.
If you are finding your videos are getting views and engagement, but you are not getting more followers this is a good option to get better visibility on a targeted audience you think would be interested in your content. Segmentation on this promotion tool is crucial and perfect for finding your niche followers.

3. Increasing the Number of Profile Views
The third and most expensive option is to increase the number of profile views. This tool can help you promote your profile and get more people to follow you.
Bringing more people to your page increases your chance of video views, website traffic, and followers. If you have an upcoming album, selling tickets to a show, or want to get more eyes on your content this is the best option.

Segmenting your audience
TikTok offers the option to segment your audience and target specific demographics who are likely to engage with your content. This is a powerful tool that can help you save costs and make your promotion more effective. You can segment your audience based on factors like age, location, and interests to make your promotion more specific or more generalized.
For my video, I specifically targeted males aged 18 to 24 who live in New York and are interested in entertainment and news. This option helped keep costs down and reached an audience that was more likely to engage with my videos.

Our Results
We promoted our video for one day to reach 3200 views on top of our organic reach of 400 and spent $17. Our video outperformed the projected views number we had paid by 42%. It also received about 12% engagement rate, a good indication that a longer promotion cycle might benefit our next video. You can promote your videos for as little as $10 to $20 depending on your promotion package. Based on our outcomes, I would promote videos to get more views to keep costs cheaper and focus on my target market who will engage with the content.
However, there are a few cons to using TikTok's promotion tools. The review process can be long, and if you're looking to utilize a trend or recent news break, this might not be as helpful as timing it with organic trends. The UX can also be confusing. As you can see above they muted our sound with their recommended sound, so I had to delete my first attempt. Promoting your videos can be costly if you are not careful. Setting a monthly budget for how much you're willing to spend to grow your account is important. Lastly, you need to remember segmentation is huge as the specific audience you’re targeting can impact your reach.
Conclusion
Promoting your content on TikTok can be helpful, but it's not the end-all-be-all. Organic creation and using new tools like the creator search insights to see what's trending have been proven methods on TikTok.
None of these tools, however, are guaranteed to make your videos go viral. You will still need to pay attention to trending sounds, use relevant hashtags, utilize SEO, and understand what your audience finds engaging.
